Joseph Upatham is a Catholic school governed by the Education Department of the Bangkok Archdiocese. It is located here in Sampran, near Bangkok. (For more detailed information about the immediate area, check out this Wikipedia entry). It is the flagship institution of the 43 schools and colleges administered by the EDBA and is also the home of the Nittayo English Language Centre and the JS Bilingual Section.
The school has a long standing reputation of academic achievement including the ROYAL DISTINCTION FOR SCHOOLS: "BEST PRIMARY SCHOOL IN THE REGION" from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in 2006.
The mission of the school is to enable students to become self-motivated, competent, lifelong learners equipped with the academic skills necessary to become contributing members of society in the 21st century.
It was licensed by the Thai Ministry of Education in 1964 and obtained high school status in 1972. The school has around 7,000 pupils and provides Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary education from Grade 1 through Grade 12. This includes 200 boys in its Seminary (grades 7-12) and over 400 boys and girls in the JS Bilingual Centre where the core subjects of the National Curriculum are taught in English. It is the biggest of the schools governed by the Catholic Archdiocese and is one of the largest combined Kindergarten, Primary, Secondary and Bilingual schools in Thailand.
With approximately ten classes for each grade (1 through 12) the average number of students per class is about 45.
For many activities such as English Language learning with native speaker teachers, the classes are split into even smaller groups. These lessons take place in dedicated, specially designed classrooms in the purpose built Nittayo English Language Centre.
The NELC is the most ambitious, dedicated languages facility ever built in Thailand by a non-profit independent school.
Only this way is it possible to be sure that all the pupils receive equality of individual attention and are able to practice their skills in the classroom. The school currently has a staff of over 450 Thai teachers, Over 40 foreign teachers and many other teaching auxiliaries.
The many buildings on the campus reflect different styles of modern school architecture on a harmoniously landscaped campus which vividly contrasts with the traditional and institutional design of many schools. The Year 2000 Jubilaeum Pavilion was built to commemorate the turn of the century and the begining of the Third Millenium of the birth of the Lord Jesus. Following Thai tradition for all kinds of pavilions or 'sala', it was constructed over the water of the lake. This sala successfully combines the aspects of conventional religious and modern Thai architecture whilst functioning as a symbol of the Christian faith.
While the school actively promotes Christian values, it also encourages diversity and individuality, and welcomes students of all religions from all regions of Thailand and abroad.
All students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of additional activities including swimming, camps and excursions, music, sports and extension programmes. The school also provides extra curricular programmes not only as a service for slower learners, but also for talented pupils who wish to accelerate their own learning process. These activities take place in the evenings after school, at weekends and during the the holidays.
The administrators and curriculum designers at Joseph Upatham School are aware that the quality of education increases exponentially with lower numbers of students in class groups for subjects that require the pupils to develop individual skills.
The school fully recognises the importance of Information Technology and the Internet for communications and for access to databases of knowledge. Pictured on the right is a computer room in the JS Bilingual Section for grades 1-4. The school's LAN comprises over 800 machines. About 80 of these are in the NELC and bilingual sections.
Many of the school's programmes are focussed on the use of modern teaching methodology, materials and technology including Computer Assisted Learning.
The school's goals are clearly defined...
Curriculum: To provide various programmes which cater for the individual learning needs of students and allow them to develop to their full potential, improve their self-esteem and to develop a diversity of skills.
Environment: To develop and maintain a learning environment in which all members of the school community strive to do their best and to ensure that the surroundings in which the students learn are safe, interesting and challenging for each individual.
Management: To provide management structures with clearly defined areas of responsibility. This ensures that the school's human resources can effectively support communication and coordination in the whole school community throughout the Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary sections.
Material Resources: Financial investment is carefully managed within a framework of priorities to develop and maintain the school's targets of achievement, resources and facilities. For example, in the JS bilingual section students are taught six core subjects in English. The classrooms are air-conditioned and some are equipped with state-of-the-art technology (computers, overhead LCD projectors, CCTV cameras and monitors, multi-channel sound recording etc.) for the correct and efficient use of audio-visual aids, and some rooms are also designed for use as full conference and workshop facilities.
Human Resources: In order to maintain its high standard of education, the school practices a programme of continuing education for its teachers. Thai and foreign teachers attend workshops administered by specialist Thai and Foreign teacher trainers in order to ensure that they are kept up to date with the latest methods and materials and that they are using these in their classrooms. This training programme also ensures that teachers are complying with the requirements of the National Curriculum.
